Documenting the Past for the Future of Wildland Fire Research
This project supports the identification and organization of data from early fire behavior experiments with particular emphasis on radiative and convective spread mechanisms. These pivotal experiments were conducted at the Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory from the early 1960s through the 1970s. This research forms the foundation of current fire spread and fire danger models used in the field to this day, as well as the current generation of web-based decision support systems. Key datasets will be scanned and stored electronically in the Forest Service National Data Archives, and the hard copies will be cataloged for current and future wildland fire researchers to reference as needed.
