Red Mountain Mastication Study
The Greenhorn Ranger District of the Sequoia National Forest requested that AMSET collaborate with them to formally assess effectiveness of mastication fuel treatments in ponderosa pine plantations. We propose to determine how well mastication works in reducing fuel hazard and wildfire behavior while maintaining live trees. Findings from this research would meet a local need, and would also provide practical knowledge to managers in similar areas in the western U.S. In a typical pine plantation in the southern Sierra, the proposal will establish a study with four treatments: mastication alone, mastication followed by controlled burn, mastication followed by pulling material away from tree boles, then followed by controlled burn, controls in which no action is taken. Utilizing these treatments, an analysis of the effectiveness of mastication fuels treatments to meet resources objectives will be conducted Additionally, fuel measurements will be used to develop custom fuel models, calibrated by fire behavior measurements taken during the controlled burns. Results from this study will be used to develop a management guide for developing plantation thinning prescriptions involving mastication. Findings will be communicated to managers and other interested parties through meetings, a website, and publications.
