Title: Measurement of firebrands generated during fires in pine-dominated ecosystems in relation to fire behavior and intensity

Project Proposal Abstract: This proposal aims at developing a suite of field diagnostics to support the quantification of ember showers and their impact in the vicinity of a fire front. The obtained data will cover ember properties and the spatial and temporal description of the firebrand fluxes in relation to fire spread properties (rate of spread, fire front geometry, and fire-line intensity), as well as to fuel and environmental properties. The data will support providing quantification for the NIST/USFS exposure matrix, developing an experimental program at the laboratory scale to understand the conditions of structural elements ignition at the Wildland-Urban Interface, as well as improving the capacities of the Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Dynamics Simulator. A main output of the project will be the definition of the experimental (field and laboratory) and numerical protocols to estimate and describe firebrand showers and their impact for other fire intensities and other ecosystems.
