Title: Using spatial and Temporal Characteristics of Northern Long-eared Bat (Myotis septentrionalis) Maternal Roost Networks and Foraging Relationships in a Repeatedly Burned Central Appalachian Forested Landscape to Inform Management

Project Proposal Abstract: This proposed research addresses task 14-1-05 Compatibility of fire and fuel treatments with threatened and endangered bats. We seek to understand the relationship of a landscape-wide prescribed fire/ecological restoration program in the central Appalachians to the roosting and foraging ecology of the endangered species candidate northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis). Documented response of northern long-eared bats, as well as other bats in the central Appalachians, such as the endangered Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis), to prescribed fire largely has been limited to immediate post-fire (1-3 years) when residual snag, new snag and altered (decreased) forest canopy cover are believed to provide abundant day-roosts and reduced-clutter foraging benefits. We propose to compare measures of day-roost habitat type and quality between burned and unburned stands/landscapes by examining roost-area size (snags and trees used per unit area), annual roost-area fidelity, network complexity and robustness to roost deletion and addition of northern long-eared bat maternal colonies in a post-WNS environment using a comprehensive acoustics, radio-telemetry, direct catch/count and genetic sampling approaches. Secondarily, we propose to use acoustical sampling methodologies to compare the relative value of foraging habitat (as measured by activity) at the species-specific level at burned and unburned stand-levels, burned and unburned watershed-levels and burned and unburned landscape scales. Data from this research will help managers in eastern forested landscapes account for northern long-eared bats within their fire management regimes in both a management and regulatory framework.
