Title: Visual Range and Particulate Matter Data Analysis and Literature Review

Project Proposal Abstract: The Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP) has a requirement for assistance to the JFSP Governing Board and Program Manager in a comprehensive data analysis and literature review as described in the recently developed JFSP Smoke Science Plan (SSP). Assistance shall include the following tasks: --Organizing a small meeting of scientists and visibility experts to clearly identify issues and goals of using visibility related information to identify Particulate Matter (PM) levels that potentially would violate National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) and less than 24 hour visibility impacts. Issues of temporal and spatial variability need to be clearly addressed. --Identify the monitoring needs of the fire community at large and identify approaches that could be taken to improve the decision making process or uncertainties in PM estimations. --Review existing literature; utilize IMPROVE (Interagency Monitoring of PROtected Visibility Environments) data and any other sources of information to critically analyse and review the validity of relating VR (Visual Range) to PM concentration and, in turn, to AQI (Air Quality Index) and related indices.
