Title: Monitoring Effectiveness of Prescribed Fire and Wildland Fire Use in the Gila National Forest, New Mexico

Project Proposal Abstract: This proposal is responding to Joint Fire Sciences AFP 2008-1 Task I . sponsoring research projects that investigate the longevity of fire and non-firefuels treatments. and in comparing the effectiveness ami economics of treatment regimes. The restoration of natura l fire cyc les and ecological processes of watersheds across all ownerships is a priority for resource managers across the 3.3 million acre Gila National Forest in central New Mexico. To this end, managers on the Gila National Forest have treated tens of thousands of acres With prescribed fire and wildland fire use 10 recent years. Local managers on the Gila NF have identified data needs and knowledge gaps relating to I ) the effectiveness of different fire management activities on reducing surface fuels and stand density and mamtauung desirable ecological effects 2) The relative costs associated with prescribed fire and wildland fire use 3) The length of time that areas burned under wildland fire use reta in effec tiveness in reducing the potential for extreme fire behavior 4) the length of time that area s treated with wildland fire use retain desirable ecological effects. "The long history of fire management. including a 30+ year history of wildland fire usc. provides unique opportunities to address these knowledge gaps on the Gila NF.
