Title: Effects of 40 Years of Prescribed Fire on Pine Regeneration and Productivity

Project Proposal Abstract: The Santee Fire Plot is the oldest ongoing prescribed fire study in the United States. The study was established in 1946 to test the effects of fire frequency and seasonality on pine growth, vegetation, and soil properties. The treatments comprised a factorial of periodic and annual, summer and winter burns. After 40 years of burning there were no deleterious effects of the treatments. In 1989, the stand was destroyed by hurricane Hugo, and a new stand was regenerated in the treatment plots. The plots have not been burned since 1989 to allow for stand establishment. The central question of this study is derived from a pilot study that showed that the long burning history has adversely affected site productivity. Why does the regenerated stand show an effect from the legacy of fire treatments when there was no apparent soil damage from the fires? That result suggests that (1) fire effects studies in mature stands is not representative of long-term responses, and (2) that regeneration may be more sensitive to changes in soil chemical and physical properties. This proposal supports a detailed assessment of the vegetation, productivity and soil biogeochemistry in an attempt to address these critically important questions, and it provides the benchmark for continuing the fire treatments, now that the stand is of sufficient stature. The findings from this work may have significant repercussions with respect to interpreting short-term fire effects studies, and cause us to rethink our approaches for measuring and monitoring site responses.
