Title: Characterization of Firefighter Safety Zone Awareness

Project Proposal Abstract: This proposal outlines a request for funding to pay for equipment and travel costs incurred by a team that can be rapidly deployed to obtain measurements of energy transfer as naturally burning fires burn into and around clearings that may be characterized as firefighter safety zones. The current state of knowledge about safety zones is based on models that have not been thoroughly tested. The selection of effective safety zones in real applications is based on science, art and/or experience. Young firefighters often do not have the experience needed to identify safety zones. The primary products from this study will be improved knowledge and models for safety zones and specific guidelines to be incorporated in firefighter training courses. The intent is to provide improved tools that enhance the knowledge of experienced firefighters, but also can be used to teach new and inexperienced firefighters some of the primary characteristics that produce effective safety zones. Results and recommendations from this study will be posted on internet websites within six months after each incident. The primary outcome of this effort will be specific guidelines that define effective safety zones. These guidelines will be formulated for implementation in firefighter training courses.
