Title: Impacts of multi-year drought on post-fire conifer regeneration in the Inland Northwest

Project Proposal Abstract: Post-fire forest recovery may be limited if wildfires are followed by drought, or if high-severity areas are too large to be naturally re-seeded by surviving trees. In the last decade forest scientists have observed this phenomenon at several sites in the southwestern US and northern Rockies, in which historically forested areas transitioned to shrubland ecosystems or otherwise non-forested states following large, mixed-severity wildfires. This study investigates the effects of drought on post-fire recovery in the Inland Northwest, and also seeks to understand post-fire management by private forest owners. Specifically, by combining ecological sampling with mail surveys the proposed work aims to: 1. Determine the rate and density of natural conifer regeneration following stand-replacing wildfires in eastern Oregon; 2. Determine the effects, if any, of multi-year drought on post-fire recovery; and 3. Understand the factors influencing post-fire management actions on private forest lands. Ultimately this work aims to inform post-fire management and recovery in the Inland Northwest on both public and private lands under changing climate and disturbance regimes.
