Title: Great Plains Fire Science Exchange
Project Proposal Abstract: The Great Plains Fire Science Exchange (GPE) proposed herein will build a network of research scientists, fire practitioners and other land managers, and public and private stakeholders to enhance fire science delivery in the Great Plains, particularly in grasslands with a long evolutionary history of fire and grazing. The GPE will deliver fire science to practitioners while informing research scientists of knowledge gaps and research needs through structured contact with fire practitioners. GPE will build on the success of the Patch Burn Grazing Working Group by partnering with diverse wildland fire-related groups, by increasing participation of agency personnel and private landowners, by increasing participation of research scientists, and by broadening the focus to all relevant areas of fire science. Despite the success of the Patch Burn Grazing Working Group, it has narrowly focused on biodiversity, and participants have been mostly agency biologists, TNC biologists, and a small pool of researchers. Therefore, the GPE will enhance the transfer of research-based knowledge by involving a larger group of scientists and a greatly expanded group of fire practitioners and land managers. Our survey data and interviews conducted through the planning grant support the value of a variety of activities targeted to accomplish the consortium objectives. Therefore, we propose to construct and maintain a web-based information portal, sponsor and co-sponsor sessions at management and scientific meetings, sponsor travel for experts to deliver programs at meetings and field tours, construct a network of fire science and fire management demonstration areas, sponsor and co-sponsor field tours and demonstration areas, host webinars, and disseminate science to practitioners and land managers using written communication (e.g., newsletters, social media) and videos.
