Title: Traditional Phenological Knowledge: Literature Review and Case Study Descriptions of Cultural Resilience in Fire Adapted Ecosystems by Tribal College Faculty in the Southern Rockies

Project Proposal Abstract: The overall objective is to develop several landscape level stories, through facilitated self-study and mapping exercises, to illustrate specific fire adapted ecosystem sites that contain meanings that have been threatened by environmental change and the ways that American Indian peoples have responded to increase resilience to these impacts. This proposal is for a one and a half year project that will contribute a comprehensive literature summary on this topic and a combination of mapping and self-study with a minimum of 20 tribal college educators. Tribal college faculty will be asked to either contribute specific stories about specific places and actions demonstrating resilience or facilitate student data collection from community members for place-based case studies which explain perceptions of potential environmental and social change impacts on traditional uses and meanings for indigenous people. A spatial representation of location, scale and intensity of meanings and threats will be compiled on an individual basis for greater understanding of potential resilience response, through application of MapMe, a toolkit for mapping landscape values and meanings primarily linked to fire and fuel treatments on forest lands.
