Title: 4th Fire Behavior and Fuels Management Conference
Project Proposal Abstract: The International Association of Wildland Fires (IAWF) 4th Fire Behavior and Fuels Management Conference will take place late February or early March in North Carolina. The IAWFs mission is to facilitate communication and provide leadership for the wildland fire community. The IAWF Fire Behavior and Fuels Conference (FBF) series was created to facilitate and support fulfillment of that mission. The purpose of the conference is to advance the knowledge and practice of fire behavior and fuels management in the field of wildland fire. Conference attendees will include individuals who work or have a vested interest in the fields of fire and resource management firefighters, land managers, researchers, consultants, administrators, officials, teachers, students, and the general public. A planning team of internationally recognized scientists and practitioners will create a combination of plenary sessions, small workgroups, posters, exhibits, concurrent and non-concurrent presentations to allow individuals the opportunity to present, discuss and learn about the current research and tools related to the conference topics which include: Circumboreal forests; peat lands and highly organic combustible soils in the southwest; and climate change. This years conference will include a virtual meeting component to expand the conference reach to a larger audience. As with previous FBF conferences, participants will have an opportunity to collaborate, connect and increase their knowledge of the most pertinent fire management research and practices, with the goal of enforcing their skill set and maintaining working relationships, as well as developing new relationships with others in the field. Support has been offered from Southern Fire Exchange; National Wildfire Coordinating Group Fuels Management Committee; North Carolina Forest Service; North Carolina Prescribed Fire Council, Inc.; North Carolina State University, College of Natural Resources and The Nature Conservancy. There is also current discussion with the International Association of Fire Safety Science about holding the conference simultaneously in the USA, St. Petersburg, Russia and virtuallyto create a truly global conference. IAWF is committed to media promotion through a variety of efforts including traditional print and radio, as well as social media to expand participation beyond conference attendees. The 4th Fire Behavior and Fuels Management Conference will be conducted under IAWFs green initiatives, in order to minimize adverse environmental impacts. An evaluation of the conference will be distributed at the closing of each day, in order to provide opportunity for improvement with future conferences. IAWF is prepared to provide deliverables including a list of conference participants, a hard copy of the program schedule booklet, a link to the booklet online and a CD-Rom of the conference proceedings.
