Title: American Fire History, 1960-2010
Project Proposal Abstract: This goal of this project is to write two complementary book-length studies, each of approximately 130,000-150,000 words that would survey and analyze the past 50 years of American fire history. One text, Between Two Fires: A Fire History of America, 1960-2010, would relate the basic narrative. The other text, To the Last Smoke, would assemble an anthology of essays that would highlight particular places, personalities, and practices. Between Two Fires would thus serve as the play-by-play record (as it were), and To the Last Smoke as the color commentary. The latter will be posted online as essays appear during the tenure of the project. Both manuscripts will be submitted as reports to the sponsoring agencies. I expect that Between Two Fires will easily find a trade publisher, and To the Last Smoke, a university press, for subsequent publication. Ideally, they might be published together as a set. This survey would involve all the federal land agencies with an interest in fire, the interagency institutions that have evolved to coordinate them, and a dozen other federal, state, and private entities that today crowd the scene, from OSHA and EPA to The Nature Conservancy and the Coalition of Prescribed Fire Councils. The federal agencies would include the Forest Service, the Interior Department fire programs, the Department of Defense, the National Interagency Fire Center, and the Joint Fire Science Program. Among the states, I anticipate focusing on a suite that has national significance: Florida, California, Oklahoma (or Missouri), the northern Great Plains, the Northeast Fire Compact, and Alaska; this will also grant some regional representation. (See Appendix A for a full roster of involved institutions.)
