Title: Belowground Impacts of Pile Burning in the Inland Northwestern U.S.

Project Proposal Abstract: Little information is available on the belowground impacts of slash pile burning on soil biological changes caused by heat flux into the soil as affected by soil texture and moisture. We propose to evaluate belowground impacts on mineral vs. ash-cap soils in a variety of fuel types in the Inland Northwest. Slash pile size and composition will be determined prior to installing heat pulse thermocouples. Slash piles will be burned in the fall (dry soil) and spring (wet soil) to determine how biological properties are altered. Additionally, the long-term impacts of slash pile burning are relatively unknown and therefore, we will evaluate >35 yr old burn areas for changes in soil chemical, physical, and biological properties. Although there are numerous slash pile studies, few are long-term and often retrospective; giving few details about the soil temperature pulse and its' longevity. Our data will contribute to National Forest System soil quality standards and the development of BMP's for slash piles to help managers protect soil function and productivity.
