Title: Overcoming Barriers to Defensible Space Behaviors

Project Proposal Abstract: A multi-year, community-based project to look at social and cognitive barriers to wildfire risk reduction by focusing on better completion of defensible space behaviors through the use of promising social science approaches. The project seeks to identify practical steps for reducing the barriers to implementing defensible space behaviors at an individual and neighborhood level, and to build on recent successful theoretical and empirical work. Methods will include manager and community collaboration, site assessments of residences, and social psychological surveys of homeowners in the WUI who represent a variety of setting attributes relevant to the scientific model such as distance from wildlands, recent fire history, community preparedness actions, and local code differences. Reports and presentations from this project will use the emerging scientific model to explore the acceptability of alternative solutions for overcoming the barriers to full compliance with defensible space behaviors, and gauge the practical utility of actions that are most likely to affect reductions in property losses.
