Title: Fire History and Climate Change Synthesis

Project Proposal Abstract: The proposed research will deliver a synthesis of Fire History information in relation to Climate Change (FHCC), which will include guidance for managers on how this information can be considered in making decisions. The synthesis and supporting literature knowledge base will be keyed to ecosystem fuels information. We will segment the FHCC knowledge base at the Ecosystem Fuels, Seasonal and Incident Scales to aid fire management information usage. A user workshop will be held to adjust and validate the utility of the proposed information structures. An extensive general and ecosystem specific literature survey will be conducted using the library search capabilities of George Mason University. While an excellent recent body of literature based on quantitative fire climatology is available for some ecosystems, many other sources of information will have to be used to provide a geographically and historically complete synthesis. Zotero, a powerful open source Firefox based publication search engine, will be used to collect, manage, and cite knowledge sources acquired from JSTOR and other archives. Deliverables will be .pdf format FHCC online and CD/DVD synthesis and interpretation for managers, with included bibliographic knowledge base; a web based updatable Zotero knowledge base; one or more refereed journal articles and selected conference presentations.
