Title: Applied nucleation as a restoration strategy in cheatgrass-invaded sagebrush ecosystems

Project Proposal Abstract: We propose to test a novel restoration strategy called applied nucleation which relies on plants growing in close proximity to one another to serve as focal areas for recovery. We propose to test two main mechanisms behind this strategy in cheatgrass-invaded sagebrush ecosystems: 1) belowground sharing of beneficial soil microbes and 2) competitive buffering against cheatgrass. We will test these mechanisms using both experimentally created nuclei and intact stands of sagebrush as nuclei, across three sites in Arizona, Utah, and Idaho. These strategies have been shown to be successful in a forestry context but are as yet untested in sagebrush ecosystems; thus this project represents a novel and potentially valuable alternative to the standard restoration practice of regular and distant spaces between plants in degraded sagebrush ecosystems.
