Title: Third Human Dimensions of Wildland Fire Conference

Project Proposal Abstract: The International Association of Wildland Fires 3rd Human Dimensions of Wildland Fire Conference is scheduled for April 17-19, 2012, in Seattle, Washington. The purpose of the conference is to advance the knowledge and practices related to the human side of managing fire prone landscapes and to bring key competencies, perspectives and experiences to the table. Attendees will include community representatives facing the challenge of fire and land management, researchers studying human dimensions, community planners, elected officials, fire protection professionals, wildland fire managers, land managers, community planners, firefighters, fire chiefs, fire-safe councils, safety officers, educators and students of fire. The Human Dimensions of Wildland Fire Conference provides an opportunity for scientists and fire managers (as well as many others in the fire field) to come together and discuss human dimension specific research in relation to fire management. Collaborative relationships are initiated and/or strengthened, a range of perspectives are shared and participants gain a greater understanding of the field of fire management, the issues at stake and the relevance of research in making informed, effective decisions. IAWFs cohesive and diverse conference planning team, along with several public and private partners is developing an agenda that will include a combination of keynote presentations, plenary sessions and two concurrent sessions throughout the week. The committee has posted an open call for papers to generate a selection pool for oral presentations, poster presentations and special sessions covering a variety of relevant topics. Those that are accepted will be grouped by topic and placed in an appropriate session in the program schedule. Presenters will be encouraged to make their presentations interactive in order to engage the audience and foster a participant centered conference. Other features of the conference include: A small trade show of exhibitors who offer benefits focused on human dimensions; round tables or Birds of a Feather Sessions that are participant led and driven; and a new feature called the Lightening Learning Session. IAWF is committed to media promotion through a variety of efforts including traditional print and radio, as well as social media and web casting to expand participation beyond conference attendees. The 3rd Human Dimensions of Wildland Fire will be conducted under IAWFs green initiatives, in order to minimize adverse environmental impacts. An evaluation of the conference will be distributed at the closing of the event, in order to provide opportunity for improvement with future conferences. IAWF is prepared to provide deliverables including a list of conference participants, a hard copy of the program schedule booklet, a link to the booklet online and a CD-Rom of the conference proceedings.
