Title: Doubling Knowledge on Fire and Eastern Invasive Plants in the Fire Effects Information System

Project Proposal Abstract: This project will provide extensive coverage in the Fire Effects Information System (FEIS) of eastern nonnative invasive plants, more than doubling the amount of information in the system on this topic. Managers have been coming to FEIS for reviews of scientific knowledge about fire-related topics since 1986. Reviews of nonnative invasive plant species were limited in FEIS until 2000, when the Joint Fire Science Program supported a project that doubled the number of invasive species reviewed in the system. Nevertheless, many eastern nonnative invasive species are not covered by FEIS. This project will update reviews of eastern nonnative invasive plants already in the system (approximately 30 reviews) and add new reviews on 40 or more species. In addition, it will describe knowledge gaps in the scientific literature regarding hundreds of eastern invasive species and fire, and it will provide this information on the FEIS website in a form easy to retrieve and use. Finally, the project will provide information, training materials, and presentations to increase effective, efficient use of FEIS among fire managers and managers of invasive species in the eastern states. The project addresses Task 2 of RFA-08-01 by gathering knowledge about fire and eastern invasive species into one easily-accessible location and creating new understanding of that information, especially regarding -how nonnative invasive plant species respond to fire and alter fire effects on native plant communities -how fire suppression activities and fire exclusion policy influence plant invasions -how invasives alter fire regime characteristics such as intensity, severity, seasonality, and frequency -how fire might be used to reduce invasions By synthesizing information on fire and invasive plant species for the eastern states and compiling information on knowledge gaps in FEIS, an easily accessible, much-used database housed on the Forest Service website, this project will improve the quality, efficiency, and cost effectiveness of fire and invasive species management.
