Title: Effects of Blowdown, Salvage Logging, and Wildfire on Regeneration and Fuel Characteristics in Minnesota’s Forests

Project Proposal Abstract: We propose to characterize the interaction of multiple disturbances on fire severity, fuel loads, forest regeneration, and carbon storage in pine-dominated systems of the Superior National Forest, Minnesota. A recent sequence of events in northern Minnesota - blowdown, followed by salvage logging, followed by wildfire in 2007 - creates an exceptional opportunity to investigate the interaction of these disturbances. Prior to the wildfire, plots from a previous JFSP project had been established in blowdown areas, with and without salvage logging, allowing us to explicitly test the efficacy of salvage logging in reducing subsequent fire severity. Results from this proposed work will guide management prescriptions intended to reduce fire risk and to ensure forest regeneration.
