Title: Validation of National Burn Severity Mapping Project Techniques in Selected Southeastern US Ecosystems

Project Proposal Abstract: The overall objective of the proposed work is to improve the ability of land managers in the Coastal Plain to accurately quantify the burn area perimeter and burn severity of wildfires and prescribed burns. The approach will be to locally sample (within the ANF) common community types to determine relationships between TM imagery algorithms (NBR) and field-measured levels of burn severity (CBI). The specific goals are: 1) Evaluate the most appropriate thresholds of remotely-sensed data values that predict categories of burn severity (none, low, medium, high) in common southeastern community types by ground-truthing the remote data; 2) Determine the window of time post-fire that NBR can accurately determine burn area and the various levels of burn severity; 3) Provide EROS with the improved methodology for application in southeastern community types; 4) Train managers in the southeast on the use of the improved NBR product through a written report and regional workshop lead by NBSMP, MTBS, and Tall Timbers Research Station collaborators. The project duration will be three years, in order to install the necessary number of field plots, incorporate anticipated wildfires, and measure fires under a range of conditions.
