Title: Management of Fuel Loading in the Shrub-Steppe: Responses 5 Years After Treatments

Project Proposal Abstract: Abstract: We will re-measure a subset of study plots established under the previous project, "Management of fuel loading in the shrub-steppe" in response to AFP 2007-2-Task2 . Our objective is to determine if our strategy to reduce B. tectorum cover and thus fire risk is sustainable after implementation. Our primary task is to test the hypothesis that bunchgrasses (Elymus wawawaiensis, Snake River wheatgrass, Secar cultivar) established in 2003 will show an increasing degree of B. tectorum control over three years. We will test the hypothesis that native species richness and cover in Plateau plots will not be different from controls 5 to 7 years after treatment application. We will monitor species composition and cover in 6 control-plots and in 6 plots where Plateau had been applied at 4 and 8 oz acre I with and without drill seeded bunchgrasses. All plots are split-plots. In addition we will monitor the survivorship, phenology, and size of established bunchgrasses and their effect on B. tectortm cover near each bunch. We will also document presence and density of new E. wawawaiensis arising from self-seeding. The products provided will be communications to land managers about our strategy. The benefit for managers and others will be an answer to whether our strategy is useful for sustained reductions in B. tectorum cover and thus reductions fire risk. We will be able to say how long it takes for our strategy to provide a significant reduction of fire risk.
