Title: Continued Evaluation of Post-Fire Recovery and Treatment Effectiveness for Validation of the ERMiT Erosion Model (Combined P07-2-2-10 and P07-2-3-06)

Project Proposal Abstract: The use and cost of post-fire emergency stabilization treatments continues to grow. With the support of several JFSP projects, much has been learned about post-fire recovery and treatment effectiveness, and these data have been used to build the Erosion Risk Management Tool (ERMiT), a web-based model that predicts post-fire erosion and mitigation effects. However, recovery and treatment effects beyond three years remain largely undetermined and the ERMiT model has not been scientifically validated. To address these needs, we will continue to measure the effects of stabilization treatments on erosion and runoff for 4-8 post-fire years at 12 existing research sites in the Western U.S. In addition to providing land managers with essential post-fire recovery and long-term treatment information, these new data, combined with previously collected data, will be used in a rigorous validation of the ERMiT model. This combination of two pre-proposal AFP tasks (re-measurement of past study sites and testing of models) maximizes personnel, existing sites, and methodologies for data collection, analysis, and model validation. Our proposed deliverables include: 1) peer-reviewed articles on long-term post-fire recovery and the effects of stabilization treatments and the validation of ERMiT; 2) a report and on-line database synthesizing results of long-term post-fire treatment effectiveness studies; and 3) workshops for BAER personnel and other land managers on the full effects of post-fire stabilization treatments and the use and interpretation of ERMiT output. In addition, a validated ERMiT model will provide greater user confidence and acceptance in the scientific community, and the output will be more defensible in potential litigation
