Title: Variable Intensity Salvage Logging After Fire: Effects on Fuel Accumulation, Regeneration, and Understory Diversity
Project Proposal Abstract: In early 2004, after the Cone Fire at Blacks Mountain Experimental Forest, an experiment was established to investigate the impacts of varying levels of fire salvage on subsequent stand development. Five levels of fire salvage, with retention of dead trees varying from 0 to 100% (by basal area) were installed in a completely randomized design with three replications. Plots were established and measured at year 0 and year 2. However, many of the processes of interest to managers, such as the rate at which snags fall and become fuel, re-establishment of natural tree seedlings, and potential invasion by non-native understory species cannot be determined with short-term data. We propose to conduct 4th, 5th and 6th year remeasurements in 2008, 2009, and 2010. This remeasurement will facilitate analysis of changes in standing (snags) and surface fuels as well as changes in understory vegetation and success of artificial and natural regeneration over a 6 year period, as they relate to fire salvage intensity in interior pine forests of northern California.
