Title: Fuels Management and Non-Native Plant Species: An Evaluation of Fire and Fire Surrogate Treatments in Chaparral Plant Community
Project Proposal Abstract: It is because of the threat of wildiand fire and the obstacles associated with prescribed fire, that Whiskeytown National Recreation Area has begun the implementation of a progressive and ambitious fuels management program that protects high value areas through a multi-faceted approach. As a portion of this program, the park is proposing fire surrogate treatments which have yet to be tested in the park or in similar habitat types. Since soil disturbance can have long lasting effects for decades, and invasions by non-native plant species are generally considered to be one of the greatest threats to biological diversity in natural areas, of greatest concern is that the combination of fire and ground disturbing activities of mechanized equipment may create conditions favorable to the invasion of non-native plant species. As most parks have discovered, there is a lack of information on how to minimize the spread of non-native species while simultaneously reducing hazardous fuels. This project will examine the effects of four different fuel reduction treatments on soil, vegetation, and microhabitat parameters, This project will directly address Task 2, and more specifically Task 3, by providing critical information which will not only allow park staff to analyze and address the impacts of fuel reduction treatments, but also enable the Fire Management Program to refine their fuel reduction projects in ways that effectively manage for forest productivity and minimizes the spread and threat of invasive plant species.
