Title: Effects of Prescribed Grazing and Burning Treatments on Fire Regimes in Alien Grass-Dominated Wildland-Urban Interface Areas, Leeward Hawaii
Project Proposal Abstract: Alien grass-fueled wildfire is converting native Hawaiian dry forest and shrubland to savannas and grasslands. This conversion is causing the loss of a unique ecosystem once biologically rich in endemic and federally endangered species and threatens structures in the wildland-urban interface. Land managers are overwhelmed by the challenge of managing wildfire in a rapidly changing landscape. Effects of a range of fuels management strategies on fire regimes in a highly alien grass-invaded lowland/montane dry forest ecosystem on leeward Hawaii island will be evaluated. The study will be conducted along a major upland highway which is a key ignition source for the larger landscape. A GIS-based fire history will be completed and used to assess average fire frequency and size for this region. Twelve different fuel treatments involving grazing, burning, herbicide, or some combination of the three will be applied. Fire behavior will be measured during the prescribed fire treatments and used to calibrate the Rothermel fire spread model to this fuel type. Fuel loading will be monitored over a two-year period following treatment. Effects of treatments on predicted fire behavior will be modeled using the observed fire behavior and fuels information. Resulting outputs will be used to predict landscape-scale fire regimes. Predicted post-treatment fire regimes will be evaluated in relation to resource values and costs. Results will be presented as a field demonstration.
