Title: Determining the Ecological Effects of Fire Suppression, Fuels Treatment, and Wildfire Through Bird Monitoring in the Klamath Ecoregion of Southern Oregon and Northern California
Project Proposal Abstract: The Klamath Bird Observatory, USDA Forest Service, USD1 Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, and others propose to investigate the ecological effects of fire management by implementing a comprehensive study of bird distribution as it relates to fire suppression, fuels treatment, and wildfire rehabilitation in the Klatnath Ecoregion of southern Oregon and northern California. This proposal addresses issues outlined in the Joint Fire Sciences Program Request For Proposals 200 1-3 task statements on administrative studies and local projects by: investigating how bird distribution and abundance has been influenced by fire, fire suppression and habitat management; implementing studies to investigate the effects of various fuels treatments on bird distribution and abundance; and developing and implementing 3 to 5-year monitoring plans to investigate the influence of intensive wildflres and recovering habitats on bird distribution and abundance. Joint Fire Sciences funding is being requested to: augment data taken for other studies to take advantage of it for new fire related work; analyze historical bird and vegetation data; and provide resources for analysis of data taken during surveys funded by cooperators. By coordinating the efforts of various management related bird monitoring programs this project will enable agencies to expedite scientifically sound, efficient, systematic, and effective solutions and monitoring programs that cross agency jurisdictions and fuel types.
