Title: National Conference on Social Acceptability of Fuel Treatments in Forest and Grassland Environments
Project Proposal Abstract: There is currently limited understanding of the social acceptability of the various means of treatment of forest or grassland fuels. Either through the application of prescribed fire or mechanical means, the social and economic implications of fuel treatments can be decisive in implementing a decision. This project will assemble current information on the known social costs and benefits of fuel treatments, and it will convene a national-level, problem-oriented conference to identify the function of social science in understanding and applying fuel treatment options. To assemble this knowledge, the conference will join social scientists, policy makers, and practitioners to provide focused analysis of prior experiences, while developing key research questions for future investigations to evaluate the social consequences of fuel treatments. The conference will produce both on-line materials and publishable proceedings.
