Title: Duff Consumption and Southern Pine Mortality

Project Proposal Abstract: The primary goals of this project are to: Determine threshold moisture conditions that initiate and maintain smoldering combustion within the forest floor of southern pine stands and to document the consequences of this combustion for overstory free mortality. Develop prescription guidelines for burning these stands that utilize this information to minimize overstory mortality. To meet these goals we will: (1) quantify the weather and climatic conditions that predispose southeastern duff for consumption; (2) identify patterns and rates of mortality within stands burned with varying duff moisture; and (3) develop a decision matrix for use by managers that will minimize risks of stand damage and dangers of residual smoke from smoldering duff.
