Title: Characterizing Historic and Contemporary Fire Regimes in the Lake States

Project Proposal Abstract: Project Objectives. There are three objectives to this project. The first is to conduct a comprehensive literature review and provide a synthesis of the disturbance regimes that distinguished and influenced the forestlands of the Lake States prior to European settlement. The second is to document how fire regimes have changed since European settlement using information on current fire sizes and locations in conjunction with a number of georelational databases. The third is to utilize a number of sources of information including General Land Office records of past fire locations and extent, maps of pre-European settlement vegetation, surficial geology maps, and ecological unit maps to map landscape ecosystems of varying susceptibility to disturbance across sixty-million acres of forested and non-forested lands in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin At the end of the project, a synthesis of all relevant references on historic disturbance regimes affecting the forests of the Lake States will be written and delivered. Additional information on climate, geology, past and current vegetation will be included in the synthesis. A brief annotated bibliography on disturbance literature will also be prepared. Changes in the extent and density of fires will be reported by comparing past fires to contemporary fires using a data base of more than 18,000 fires recorded over the past decade. A map of the entire Lake States region will be created that ranks landscape ecosystems ranging from a few to tens of thousands of acres in size into five classes of wildfire susceptibility. All information will be served over the Internet on the Forest Service's webpage , and could be written to CD's as well.
