Title: Incorporation of Wildland Fuels Information Into Scale Land Use and Planning Processes

Project Proposal Abstract: A 2-year study is proposed in response to Task 3 of the second Request for Proposals authorized by the Joint Fire Science Program Governing Board ("Develop, evaluate, or compare methods or approaches to incorporate wildland fuels management information into landscape scale land use and plan processes"). The proposed research will produce a comprehensive, user-oriented problem analysis examining extant literature, core information requirements, and recent attempts at incorporating wildland fuels information into landscape scale land use and planning processes. Based on findings from the problem analysis, two different spatially-explicit prototype models will be constructed for the same watershed: a GIS-based simulation model for planning landscape prescribed fires and a model for optimizing large scale fuels management. The models will be compared and evaluated in terms of data requirements, complexity, and relevancy to resource manager concerns. Results will be shared with the same users involved in the problem analysis. Valuable insights will be gained about problems associated with planning and implementing fuels management strategies at landscape scales. Recommendations will be made for removing obstacles to plan implementation.
