Title: Effect of Fuel Treatments on Wildfire Severity

Project Proposal Abstract: This proposal responds to Task 4 of the second Request for Proposals authorized by the Joint Fire Science Program Governing Board, which calls for projects that require rapid response to obtain critical fuel management-related information following multiple or large-scale fire incidents. Current fuels management initiatives propose prescribed fire and other treatments to reduce the potential of catastrophic wildfire. The proposed research would compare the severity of future wildfires in adjacent treated and untreated stands. The time-dependency for collection of this ephemeral data has been proven through previous experience with the proposed methods. The results of this research would provide information on the effectiveness of fuel treatments for reducing wildfire severity across ecosystems, fire regimes, geographic locations, and management jurisdictions. The additional information produced by this project would also support and improve a currently funded assessment of the generality of fuel treatment effectiveness.
